Professional Bio

Julian Cook serves as the Associate Director of Programs & Education for Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EIB) at Providence Day School. In his role, he collaborates with students, teachers, EIB coordinators, school counselors, affinity and alliance group advisors, deans, division heads, and families, among others, in order to provide opportunities for EIB-centered education and development for students, faculty, and staff. Julian works in conjunction with area school leaders to organize diversity leadership conferences for middle and upper school students, in addition to arranging other student conference experiences. With six years of experience working in independent schools, Julian began as a Middle and Upper School Spanish teacher and became the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging at Doane Academy (Burlington, NJ). Prior to that, he instructed Spanish in Windham Public Schools (Windham, CT), in collaboration with EastConn Adult & Community Programs, at the University of Connecticut (Storrs), and with the Regional Math/Science Center (Frostburg, MD). Julian spent a decade working with summer camps with first-generation college students in Upward Bound, encouraging outdoor education with the YMCA, and at HorizonsCT where he worked closely with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He credits his experiences, in the classroom, in advising young learners, and in summer camps, as a constant impetus to encourage and foster equity and inclusion in the school community (and beyond). Julian holds a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages & Literature (Spanish) with a Sociology minor from Frostburg State University and a master’s degree in Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (Spanish Studies) from the University of Connecticut. Moreover, he studied law and Latin American and Spanish literature and culture for one year at Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Monterrey, N.L., México).
