Organization Overview
Wayne Country Day School opened its doors on September 2, 1969. The board formed a non-profit corporation and sold memberships. By January of 1969, ninety-eight families were members of the corporation. Dr. John Smith was hired as the first head of school. His goals for the school included accreditation by the state at the end of two years and accreditation by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in three years.
Ten grades were offered when the school opened in 1969, and the tuition was expected to be about $500 per child. The first class graduate was Gary Bartlett, husband of former board chair, Mary Bartlett, and father to the 1000th graduate, Will Bartlett, Class of 2016.
From its inception, Wayne Country Day School has had a strong college preparatory curriculum. As the founding members wrote in 1969: “Implicit in the name Day School are the high values its patrons place on the home and family as essential guiding influences.”
In 2018, a student and his advisor wrote a grant to develop a STEM Center. As of 2020, Wayne Country Day's STEM Center was established using a suite of two rooms. Grant monies totaling over $30,000 to date have provided five 3D printers, drones, and other tools for various projects/activities.
As of the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, Wayne Country Day celebrates a student body of 302 members in grades 3K-12 and a faculty/staff of 52. Administrative offices, the library, and 3K-12 classrooms are housed within the main building. The gymnasium is located behind the middle school wing and joins the main building through a glass corridor. The café is located on the second floor of the gym. The campus offers athletic fields for soccer, baseball, cross country, and softball. The wooded area behind the school offers running trails for cross country/track and outside classroom opportunities.
