2024 College Counselors Conference

Tuesday, December 10, 2024
8:30 AM - 3:30 PM (EST)

Join us for a day of networking and discussion as we explore key topics shaping the admissions process this year.

We’ll begin with a focus on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), discussing strategies to strengthen pipelines between independent schools and HBCUs, while examining recent trends in student engagement, academic programs, and community impact at these institutions.

Next, we’ll address the effects of new North Carolina legislation dismantling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This session will explore how these changes are influencing campus climates and student experiences, particularly for historically marginalized populations such as Black, Brown, Jewish, and LGBTQ+ students.

We’ll also look at US migration patterns and their impact on admissions in North Carolina, with a focus on why demand for public universities in the South is surging. This discussion will shed light on demographic shifts and other factors driving these trends.

Finally, we’ll examine the effects of the NCAA Transfer Portal on high school athletes. This session will provide insights into how the portal is reshaping recruitment and scholarship opportunities across NCAA divisions, offering practical strategies to help student-athletes navigate the new landscape of college sports.

This event promises to equip attendees with the knowledge and strategies to better support families through today’s evolving admissions environment.

My name is Clay Alexander and I serve the University of Tennessee Knoxville as the Director of First Year Recruitment in the Undergraduate Admissions Office. I lead a team of recruiters/admissions counselors who are based both on-campus and regionally across the state of Tennessee and U.S. I am in my 26th year working in higher education, specifically in enrollment management, having served at both public and private institutions with stops at Francis Marion University (SC), Catawba College (NC), Greensboro College (NC) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

In 2015 I became a Volunteer and moved to Rocky Top with my wife Ashley and our two sons, Brayden and Blake. We live in west Knoxville and are active members of the Farragut community.

I was a first-generation college student, beginning my studies at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston Salem, NC and then transferred to complete my undergraduate degree in Recreational Management and Administration at Pembroke State University, now known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The foundation for my career was formed while at PSU, serving as an Ambassador and Tour Guide for the university. That experience motivated me to leave behind a career in recreation and become an admissions counselor.

I love being a Vol and representing and assisting future Vols with the application, admission and enrollment process. Go Big Orange!

Erin is excited to be a part of the Spartan family, bringing with her over 15 years of college admissions experience. Prior to UNCG, she was the Director of Admissions at Randolph-Macon College for 5 years and before that worked at Guilford College, so she’s a boomerang back to GSO. Erin completed her undergraduate degree at Hiram College, graduating with a B.A. in Communication Studies. She also has an M.Ed in Enrollment Management and Policy from the University of Southern California.

A senior enrollment administrator with more than 20 years of experience in higher education across multiple states is the Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The position provides leadership, direction, and coordination of all aspects of enrollment management, including student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, new student orientation and enrollment marketing.

For Joseph O. Montgomery, M.S. Ed., an admissions/enrollment management veteran of Tuskegee University, the University of Miami, Voorhees College and the College Board, the role at North Carolina A&T is a something of a homecoming: He previously served as the university’s senior associate director of Undergraduate Admissions, 2011-13, and earned his master’s degree in adult education at A&T.

In addition to his permanent appointments, Montgomery has served over the past 15 years as an enrollment management consultant to several universities and organizations.

Montgomery completed his bachelor’s degree in biology at Voorhees College, and after graduation worked for Voorhees as an admissions counselor and recruiter. He was named senior assistant director of Admissions for the University of Miami in 2005 and then director of Admissions & Recruitment at Voorhees in 2008.

He joined A&T in 2011 as senior associate director of Undergraduate Admissions, playing a significant role in growing enrollment toward A&T’s emergence as America’s largest historically Black university three years later.

A six-year stint followed as director of Higher Education Services in the Southern Region for the College Board. Montgomery was named vice president of Tuskegee University for Enrollment Management and Student Success in 2019, overseeing Financial Aid, the Registrar, Student Retention, Undergraduate Admissions and Career Education and Leadership Development.

Bethany Meighen, the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, is the chief student affairs officer at the UNC System and serves as the liaison between the System and the 17 institutions on matters related to student success, financial aid, admissions, student development, and behavioral health. She also oversees access programs and works closely with committees and educational agencies on policies related to minimum admissions and course requirements. Meighen received an undergraduate and master’s degree from the University of Charleston and an Ed.D. from the University of North Carolina.

Angela Nixon Boyd was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, and is the daughter of Thomas and Delores Nixon. She received her early education from the Portsmouth, Virginia Public Schools system and graduated from Manor High School.

She attended Hampton Institute as an undergraduate student where she earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Media Arts, the same year that the Institute became Hampton University. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from Hampton University as well. She was involved in a number of clubs and organizations as a student at Hampton, but the most impactful were the Student Leadership program and the Gamma Iota chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Mrs. Boyd has worked in higher education (primarily Admissions) for more than 35 years and has experiences from several state and private schools in the Hampton Roads area to include Old Dominion University, Christopher Newport University and Hampton University. She is a member of several professional organizations to include the National Association for College Admissions Counselors (NACAC); the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admissions Counseling (PCACAC); and the Virginia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (VACRAO). She currently serves as the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management and Dean of Admission at Hampton University, where she has been employed for the past 23 years.

In her personal time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and watching a good football, basketball, or baseball game, in short --all things sports related.

She is the proud mother of one son, Brenton Nicholas Boyd, a 2018 Honor graduate of Hampton University, and a 2024 graduate with a PH.D. in African American Studies from Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
